Arctic blast “Coral” to bring unusually cold weather across Cyprus with near or record low temperatures and snow

The Arctic blast, named “Coral” has started affecting southeastern Europe with way below average temperatures and snowfalls mainly across Romania and Bulgaria as it progresses southwards, towards the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East in the coming days. Temperatures across Cyprus are expected to plummet by 8 to 12 degrees Celsius by the end of this week.

The Arctic air mass along with the long wave trough is expected to cut off from the main westerly flow with a cut-off low forming in the coming days.

A temperature drop is expected to start on Thursday for Cyprus with temperatures dropping to near seasonal average and/or slightly below with the possibility for a few light snow showers over the highest mountains. At the same time winds will strengthen from northern directions.

On Friday the cut-off low will start to form with a further temperature drop expected. Temperatured ranging around 4-7 degrees Celsius below seasonal average. Any showers over the mountains will fall as snow from around 700 meters and above.

Over the weekend and Monday, the cut-off low will remain nearly stationary over the Black Sea – Southern Russia with the Arctic air mass reaching its peak over the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East. Temperatures over Cyprus expected to range between 8-11 degrees Celsius below seasonal average with near or record low temperatures expected mainly over the mountains and possibly night time lows for the central plain and coastal areas. Temperatures over the highest mountains will remain way below zero for at least a 72-96 hour period, with hard frost persisting throughout the day. The record low temperature of -13 degrees Celsius for Troodos may be reached or broken as seen on our 10 Day Forecast below. Frost expected to form over the central plain and coastal areas during night time hours.

Any showers during the three day period mentioned above will fall as snow over the mountains and high ground, with a snow shower or two likely for the central plain. Snow flurries or a wintry mix is also likely for some coastal areas.

Temperatures will gradually start to recover Tuesday/Wednesday but will remain below seasonal average as the Arctic air mass heads northeastwards.
